You might have heard a lot about free unlocks, and a load of websites offering the Factory IMEI Unlock for your iPhone, but most of them do not work, and you end up wasting a lot of time.
This unlock is for iPhones on baseband 04.12.01, 04.11.08 and others. The other thing is that this unlock works on all iPhones versions from 2G to 4S and on all versions of the iOS.
Factory Unlock by IMEI — Explained
IMEI unlocks are always permanent, and no matter how many times you upgrade or downgrade your iPhone the IMEI will remain unaffected. It acts like a factory IMEI unlock, and it does not void the Apple warranty. This service can be used to permanently unlock iPhone 5.
The IMEI lock is basically a lock on your iPhone that renders it useless, the carriers block your IMEI number and so your iPhone cannot be used as a cell phone. To unlock it, all you have to do is to choose your carrier, give them your IMEI and wait for a week or so, you will then be billed and will get an email stating that your phone is now unlocked. Just connect your iPhone with iTunes and you will get a message that your device has been unlocked, that's all there is to it.

as far as i know the only way so far to unlock it is taking your iphone to any softbank shop and ask for the service.....they can factor unlock it like at&t but its not free..mine is also from softbank but unfortunately im not in Japan anymore...good luck!

Hey brother, you should try www.cellunlocks.net they unlock AT&T Iphone any baseband in just a few hours, so even if you update to 5.1 they could still unlock it, and they have good customer service. They worked for me anyway....
